Bright Stock Base Oil (BS 150)

Bright Stock Base Oil (BS 150)

Bright stock base oil, specifically BS 150, is a high-viscosity oil positioned at the upper end of the specifications for Grade I base oils. Produced through atmospheric and vacuum distillation at Group I refineries, brightstock is extracted and dewaxed from residual oils and undergoes hydro finishing.

Viscosity Specifications:

  • BS 150 Viscosity: 28.0-33.5 cSt at 100°C
  • BS 150 Viscosity: 461-597 cSt at 40°C

Most of Group III and Group II refineries have no possibility to produce such heavy grades as brightstock, only few of them can make base oils with viscosity @ 100C above 20 cSt, which creates a high demand for this product.

Applications of Bright stock Base Oil

  • Engine oils
  • Transmission fluids
  • Gear oils
  • Metalworking fluids
  • Greases
  • Hydraulic oils
  • Transformer oils

Packaging Options:

Bright stock base oils can be supplied in various formats, including:

  • Flexi-containers
  • ISO-tanks
  • IBCs in 20-foot containers
  • Bulk vessels for export
  • Trucks within Europe
  • In CIS countries the product is available in rail tank cars

For colder destinations, we recommend ISO-tank delivery with heating, as brightstock becomes too viscous near 0°C.

FAQ about bright stock Base Oil (BS 150)

Base oil and bright stock are not the same, though they are closely related.

Key Differences:

  • Category: Bright stock is a specific type of base oil, whereas base oil is a broader term that includes a range of oils (including bright stock).
  • Viscosity: Bright stock is much heavier and more viscous compared to most other base oils.
  • Applications: Bright stock is typically used in applications requiring thicker oils, while lighter base oils are used in general-purpose lubricants.

Bright stock is a subset of base oils, but not all base oils are bright stock.
