Tatneft is planning to start production of VHVI-6 base oil in spring 2022 and to reduce the production of VHVI-4.
Taneco’s base oil plant produces 90,000 metric tons per year of Group II and 100,000 tons per year of Group III base oils. It is the main exporter of Group III base oils from Russia that also produces HVI-2 grade. Tatneft’s plant exports mainly through the ports of the Baltic states and Novorossiysk. Taneco loads by rail in flexi containers and iso tanks.
The market source mentioned that Taneco is planning to start producing VHVI-6 base oil from March 2022. Base oil market has been waiting for this for several years. Tatneft started the project last year by overhauling several units of its Nizhnekamsk refinery.
There is a high demand on the market for this grade because there was some supply imbalance from Russia: for a long time the only available grade was VHVI-4. It is likely that we are going to see the exports of this grade already next year.
The 6 cSt Group III is mostly used in motor oils for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles but can also be used in industrial applications.
